Major conference to focus on opportunities and challenges facing financial system

The Central Bank of Ireland is hosting a major conference this week to discuss and debate the driving forces shaping the financial system.

Over 300 consumer representatives, industry leaders, and international policymakers will gather in Dublin today and tomorrow to discuss some of the key opportunities and challenges facing the system, including consumer protection, climate change, innovation, disruption and regulation.

‘Supporting the Economy, Delivering for the Consumer’ is the theme of the event.

The speakers taking part include Central Bank of Ireland Governor Gabriel Makhlouf, Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe, EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness and Governor of Banque de France François Villeroy de Galhau.

“The financial services landscape in Ireland and across Europe is changing and the Central Bank wants to be front-footed in its response to the change,” said Mr Makhlouf.

“This week’s conference is an opportunity to bring together diverse perspectives to discuss and debate some of the important challenges and opportunities facing the financial system and consumers,” he added.

Ms McGuinness, the EU Commissioner for Financial services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, said the conference was happening as efforts continue to build a financial system for the future that is resilient.

“A new European financial landscape has emerged and is continuing to evolve. Ireland’s financial sector is part of that evolution and is a significant EU financial centre,” she said.
